24 March 2010

emailed to me by brilliant friend Audra after my last post regarding the difference in perception of "cold weather" between londoners and those of us hearty enough to hail from new england.

60° F:
Southern Californians shiver uncontrollably.
People in New England sunbathe.

50° F:
New Yorkers try to turn on the heat.
People in New England plant gardens.

40° F:
Italian & English cars won't start.
People in New England drive with the windows down.

32° F:
Distilled water freezes.
Maine's Moose head Lake's water gets thicker.

20° F:
Floridians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves, wool hats.
People in New England throw on a flannel shirt.

15° F:
New York landlords finally turn up the heat.
People in New England have the last cookout before it gets cold.

0° F:
All the people in Miami die.
New Englanders close the windows.

10° below zero:
Californians fly away to Mexico.
The Girl Scouts in New England are selling cookies door to door.

25° below zero:
Hollywood disintegrates.
People in New England get out their winter coats.

40° below zero:
Washington DC runs out of hot air.
People in New England let the dogs sleep indoors.

100° below zero:
Santa Claus abandons the North Pole.
New Englanders get frustrated because they can't start their "kahs."

460° below zero:
All atomic motion stops (absolute zero on the Kelvin scale).
People in New England start saying, "cold 'nuff for ya?"!

500° below zero:
Hell freezes over.
The Red Sox win the World Series!..........wait what?!!! I guess I didn't read it all the way through!!!

"How To Tell A Londoner From A New Englander"

Exhibit A: The Beginning of Spring Morning Commute

  • The Londoner will still be sporting jackets, hats, scarves and maybe even gloves.
  • The New Englander will be wearing a t-shirt.

this is awesome

since I love the muppets:

though let's be honest, I don't need an excuse to fill in another bracket.

seriously arizona?

well, that didn't go quite as planned...

but in my defense, there is little to no coverage of the NIT tourney, and arizona used to be quite good.

but uconn made it to the second round! (although apparently just barely)
I don't have them going any further than this, becasue honestly this year's team has some issues. evidenced by them not making the ncaa cut this year. but it is much better to be knocked our in the the second round than in the first.

more honorable of a death, if you will.

also going to be playing around with the graphics of these brackets. I am photoshopping them on the sly here at work, so don't have too much time to experiment with them. all I have discovered thus far is that the slash lines and check marks are visually superior to faux highlighter graphics. but only just. going to search for a better method...

[also, apparently blogger likes to cut off images in this new format. just click on the bracket to view the whole thing.]
death has been following the Gaudette side of the familty lately.
3 people from that side of the family have passed away in the past two weeks. all before their time and all some-what unexpected.

the lastest was my cousin Ryan tuesday morning. 33 and very out of the blue. he and his sisters were the cousins we were always closest to over the years. geographically we were always quite close and my siblings and I practically grew up with them. major holidays were either spent at their house or ours. the memory coming to mind right now is of easter egg hunts in a sunny backyard when I was around 6 or so. we've all been there at graduations, weddings and the births of brand new little [second] cousins. this is a sad event for everybody.

Ryan, you were a wonderful person and a kind friend.

you will be very much missed.

rest in peace.

16 March 2010

the madness of march!

it's bracket time baby!!

growing up on uconn basketbal like I did, it is hard for me not to get a bit too excited about the tournaments this time of year. Last year nobody knew what the hell I was talking about when I brought up the notion of a friendly office bracket pool, so even though this current office is highly dysfunctional and I am actively looking for a way out, it is nice to have some fellow basketball brethern. (even if they do root for notre dame, booooo)

now I am inexplicably pretty good at this. two years ago I won the office pool, and last year I predicted the entire west region of the bracket and three of the final four correctly, which I was pretty damn proud of.

so, without further ado, here are my ncaa 2010 picks!

now, there are quite a few familiar names not included in the above layout. north carolina, arizona, ucla, indiana, and most importantly, no uconn. a variety of things brought this about, including the stint coach jim calhoun did in the hospital for health issues towards the beginning of the season. but mostly it's that the uconn men are frustratingly inconsistant year after year. unlike the power-house women. but more on them later.

so the huskies failed to make the cut for the ncaa tournament this year. but they are a no. 4 seed in the nit tournament. therefore an nit bracket needed to be filled out! obviously.

and so on to the women! I fill out a women's bracket as well as a men's bracket every year. not only because the women huskies tend to perform better than the men, and I grew up watching both pretty evenly, and it's double the bracket fun (!), but it frustrates and annoys me to no end the next to nothing coverage the ncaa women's tournament recieves from national media outlets. expecially compared to the massive amout garnered by the male counterpart. this is found across the sports spectrum and is just downright dispicable. I could go on and on about this, but this post is about brackets. and the joy gained there from. so I move on.

this year, the uconn women are kicking some serious ass. not only did they break the standing undefeated streak record (their own from a couple of seasons ago, btw), but have won this season by an average of 35 points, and every single game by a double digit spread. this team thus far has been right up there with the '01-'03 team. and they have been showing no signs of slowing down.

so obviously, the first thing I did after printing out this bracket was put them in the championship spot.

as the tournaments progress and the games are played, I will post annotated versions of these brackets, with how I am doing. most likely after each round.
as a disclaimer I would like to point out that I have not been following college basketball at all this season, with the exception of a few articles here and there about uconn when they popped up on the sports blogs. so though I did read some articles and predictions to try and get a reading on how teams were doing this season, this is alomost all guess-work.

which may actually help me out in the long run...
