well. ben and I finally got a hold of virgin airlines last night.

it turns out we can reschedule the return leg of the round trip flight we booked from london last august.
which is good.
cause for a while we thought we wouldn't be able to and would have to purchase a whole new flight.

which would be uber expensive.

but. it also turns out flight bookings are only valid for one year.
so the latest we could reschedule for was the 28th of august.

so hold on to your hats kids.
we are leaving the country exactly two months from now.
[two weeks prior to when we were planning on leaving.]

pray to god, allah, buddha, the crazy homeless man on the corner that our visas get sorted out in time, we have no issues getting into the uk a whole month before my course starts and we are able to pull everything together in time.

also get geared up for the weekends where we attempt to see everybody on this side of the planet at least one more time.

it's gonna be crazy.

so I am waaaaaaaay behind on my reading.

with the wedding, getting ready for the wedding, recovering from the wedding, etc etc etc I just haven't had many opportunities to spend a lot of time with my books.

work doesn't help either.

and with the international moving and starting grad school in a few months, I think I'll start to slip again.
(do textbooks count for this challenge? I think they should.)

I have gone from cavalier "reading 100 books will be easy!" to "oh sh*t, I don't think I'm gonna make 100 books!" fairly quickly.

ah well.

we'll just have to see how many I manage to fit in before the end of december 31st.

and do better next year.

mark your calenders.
100 books in a year [2012] will be epic.
(and much better planned...)

At first first glance, Christopher Jonassen’s photographs might look like pictures of distant planets, but in reality these are the bottoms of used frying pans, being documented as-is, in a straight forward and repetitive composition

yeah.
that's pretty cool.*

so I think this is incredibly neat.

colleges don't really do enough to prepare students for the real world after graduation.
not in truly practical terms, anyways.

therefore I have decreed more schools should follow risd's example and provide tangible footholes to be able to get going outside of a controlled academic setting.
(and since I have decreed it, obviously it will happen...)

I wish rwu had done something like this.
I would have been completely lost if I hadn't already gotten an internship the summer before.

Design School Equips Grads with Entrepreneurial Toolkits

During tough economic times, the academic challenges of college can pale next to the difficulty of finding a job afterwards. Aiming to help make its graduates’ lives easier in this respect, the Rhode Island School of Design has begun equipping them with a kit of business-oriented tools upon graduation.
Now in their second year, RISD’s “artrepreneur kits” include practical tools and resources designed “to help these highly creative thinkers to maximize their potential for innovation and explore entrepreneurial possibilities”. Among them, for instance, is a Square device and activation code, enabling graduates to process credit card payments anywhere. Also included in the kit are free six-month accounts with Prosite, a newly launched online portfolio site from Behance, along with an accompanying publication. YouSendIt, meanwhile, is providing each RISD graduate with a 2GB account free for three months, followed by a service discount on the file-transfer service thereafter. Perhaps best of all, Etsy this year is offering the first-ever Etsy RISD Fellowship to the graduate whose shop on the recently launched RISD Etsy Team Page shows the most promise. The winner will receive a USD 1,500 grant to attend Hello Etsy: A Summit on Small Business and Sustainability in Berlin this fall. RISD also maintains a section on Kickstarter to help its students gain funding and visibility.”

wednesday observations

.
I am apparently a city girl.
I can sleep through heavy traffic, sirens and even the random drunk person as long as they don't linger under my window.
but birds?
can't fall asleep with northern new hampshire birds outside the window. they sound like somebody gave them a megaphone and cranked it up to the loudest setting.
stupid birds...

this morning I put on a skirt and a tank top, slathered on the spf 100 and went outside to the car.
were we going to the beach?
no.
we were driving to the grocery store.
curse my english ancestry!

our wedding dance playlist is the bestest thing to finish up making decorations to.
hands down.

.

I should be writing my vows.
but instead I am going through the archives of this incredibly neat tumblr.

it's all photos of abandoned buildings.
they're beautiful.

and this video.
oh my this video.

I want to do that.
like right now.
I want to pick up, hop on a plane and explore old abandoned european buildings.

alas, I have neither the time nor funds.
especially not the funds.

I think I was meant to be rich...

I mailed my acceptance of multiple thousands of dollars in student loans back to UCL yesterday.
